dam panis unam, et assaturam bubulae carnis unam, et similam frixam oleo laetitiae, in resurrectione, propter honorem suae matris.
Glossa: "Pia sollicitudo sanctorum succurrit precum instantia peccatoribus, donec misericordiam Dei impetret super eos, pravos homines, et malignos spiritus compescens, ne vitam illorum ulterius corrumpant, prava suggerendo." Et David Saul sepelivit.
LIBER REGUM III.
Rex David senuerat, habebatque aetatis plurimos dies 2.
of bread, and one roast of beef, and fine flour fried with the oil of gladness, in the resurrection, on account of the honor of his mother.
2. Likewise, she is the Mother of recalling sinners from the far country. Hence she is signified by the Thecuite woman, who said to David, II Kings XIV, 7 and following: They seek to extinguish my spark that has been left. And King David said: The Lord lives! for not one of the hairs of your son shall fall upon the earth. And thus Absalom was recalled.
3. Likewise, she is the mother of preservation, who cherishes sinners so long until she obtains for them the grace of God. Hence she is signified by Resphan, which is interpreted chariot 1, who did not allow the birds by day or the beasts by night, that is, the demons, to tear the seven men hanging on the gibbet, namely of sin, on account of the seven mortal sins, from David, that is, from Christ, but prohibited them, until water, namely of grace, contrition, and confession, dripped upon them from heaven, that is, from the mercy of God. The Gloss: "The pious solicitude of the saints comes to the aid of sinners by the insistence of prayers, until it obtains the mercy of God upon them, restraining depraved men and malignant spirits, lest they further corrupt their life by suggesting evil things." And David buried Saul.
4. Likewise, she is the cistern of grace. II Kings XX, 15: David desired water and said: O if someone would give me a drink of water from the cistern that is in Bethlehem beside the gate!
THE THIRD BOOK OF KINGS.
King David had grown old and had very many days of age 2.
1. The ever most excellent Virgin Mary was desired and sought by the desire and ardor of the holy Fathers, that she might warm the King of kings through the incarnation in her lap, that by receiving him she might warm him; in the preservation of the whole life of Christ, by ministering to him in this world; and that she might stand in the empyrean heaven praying for sinners. In III Kings I, 1 and following, the Virgin Mary is signified by Abisag the Shunammite, which is interpreted my father abounding, or the roaring of my father; concerning her praise it is said: Therefore his servants, namely David's servants, that is, the holy Fathers, said to him: Let us seek in all the earth a rational creature that is under heaven for our lord the king, a young virgin, worthy, and let her stand before the king, and warm him, and sleep in his bosom: so that the King of kings, and let her warm him, through the incarnation in the lap of her womb, and let him sleep in her bosom, the most pure with the most pure, the creator in a creature, the Father in a daughter, the Lord in a handmaid. Let us also seek the most wise Virgin, most ardent in charity, who may inflame God himself toward liberation and compassion; for it is contained there, and let her warm our lord the king. Let us also seek the most wise Virgin who knows, wills, and is able to stand as intercessor before the king to re-
