fraenandum, ad excusandum, ad judicandum, ad placandum. Quaesierunt igitur adolescentulam speciosam in omnibus finibus Israel, et invenerunt, licet difficillime, Abisag Sunamitidem, id est, Mariam. Hanc omnes eligamus, secundum illud Poetae: Elige cui dicas: Tu mihi sola places.
In annuntiatione posita fuit Domina mundi in throno gratiae, in passione Filii in throno misericordiae, in nostra causa in judicio, in throno misericordiae, in assumptione vero sua ad caelos in throno gloriae.
strain, to excuse, to judge, and to appease. Therefore they sought a beautiful young woman in all the borders of Israel, and they found, although with the greatest difficulty, Abisag the Shunammite, that is, Mary. Let us all choose her, according to that saying of the Poet: Choose one to whom you may say: You alone please me. She was sought in the Law and the Prophets, in the time of the Patriarchs and Prophets, but she was found in Nazareth by the Archangel Gabriel 1, in the time of grace in the annunciation.
2. Likewise, she is the advocate of sinners, having three things, namely wisdom, eloquence, and fidelity, which an advocate ought to have; hence she is signified by Bathsheba. III Kings I, 18 and following: Bathsheba, that is, Mary, said to Adonijah, that is, to the sinner: Good; I will speak prudently, humbly, insistently, and perseveringly for you, miserable, needy, and despairing. But to whom? certainly to the great, strong, and glorious King. Therefore Bathsheba came to King Solomon, which was done in the assumption, that she might speak to him for Adonijah, that is, the sinner. And the king, that is, Christ, rose to meet her, cheerfully, totally, and solemnly. And a throne of glory was set for the mother of the king. In the annunciation the Lady of the world was placed on the throne of grace; in the passion of the Son, on the throne of mercy; in our case in judgment, on the throne of mercy; but in her assumption to the heavens, on the throne of glory. Hence it follows: She sat at his right hand, as empress, as distributor of graces. And the king said to her: Ask confidently for all, my most pure mother, most obedient to me, and most dear above every creature; for it is not right, neither before me nor before the Angels and all the saints, that I should turn away your face by not hearing you asking for anything whatever.
3. Likewise, she is the mother and lady of salvation; this was signified in Abiathar the priest, who had offended King Solomon. The king said to him: ... Indeed, you are a man of death; but today I will not kill you, because you carried the ark, that is, Mary, by honoring her, by subjecting yourself to her, and by committing yourself to her fidelity and mercy, before David my father.
4. Likewise, she is the temple of charity. III Kings VI, 22: in her praise it is said: There was nothing in the temple, that is, Mary, that was not covered with gold. The Gloss: "For charity alone reigns." Two doors in the temple were of olive woods 2. The Gloss: "Love of God and neighbor."
5. Likewise, she is the cloud and dwelling-place of the hiding of the Son of God 3.
6. III Kings X, 1 and 2: But also the queen of Sheba, that is, Mary, entered Jerusalem with a great company of servants and Saints, indeed also of her Son himself, and this on the day of the assumption. Sheba is a royal city of Ethiopia, whence this queen was, who ruled over the two kingdoms of Ethiopia and Egypt.
7. Likewise, she is the throne of the whole Trinity. III Kings X, 18 and following: King Solomon made a throne, that is, the glorious Virgin, and this in the time of grace, when the mother of mercy was born in the world, of ivory, of chastity, purity, innocence, great in nature, in grace, in glory,

- Note that something is lacking in this place, omitted by the scribe through carelessness. For from chapter VIII of the Third Book of Kings, in which the cloud and the house of the Lord filled by the cloud are treated, he passed to chapter X of the same book and to the history of the queen of Sheba (note of the Lyon editor). (Nota aliqua hoc in loco deesse, a scriptore per incuriam dimissa. Nam a cap.
