SERMO LXV.

IN DOMINICA XI POST TRINITATEM.

Publicanus a longe stans, nolebat nec oculos ad caelum levare: sed percutiebat pectus suum, dicens: Deus propitius esto. Luc. XVIII, 13.

Nota, quod Publicanus iste figuram gerit veri paenitentis. Cum autem nos omnes peccaverimus, et paenitere nos oporteat, sex nobis necessaria sunt ad veram poenitentiam, quae ex istius Publicani factis cognoscuntur et verbis.

I. Consideratio divinae severitatis. II. Inspectio propriae fragilitatis. III. Dolor admissae iniquitatis. IV. Sinceritas confessionis. V. Strenuitas satisfactionis. VI. Supplicitas orationis.

Necessaria est nobis consideratio divinae severitatis, quae innuitur ibi, ubi dicitur: Publicanus a longe stans. Servi enim qui delinquunt, severitatem Dominorum suorum considerantes, non audent appropinquare, sed a longe stant propter metum: et nobis ita utile est, ut severitatem districti judicis attendamus,

ON THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

The publican, standing far off, did not wish even to lift his eyes to heaven, but was striking his breast, saying: God, be propitious. Luke XVIII, 13.

Note that this publican bears the figure of the true penitent. But since we have all sinned, and it is fitting for us to repent, six things are necessary for us for true repentance, which are known from the deeds and words of this publican.

I. Consideration of divine severity. II. Inspection of one's own fragility. III. Sorrow for admitted iniquity. IV. Sincerity of confession. V. Strenuousness of satisfaction. VI. Supplication of prayer.

Consideration of divine severity is necessary for us, which is intimated there, where it is said: The publican standing far off. For servants who commit fault, considering the severity of their lords, do not dare to approach, but stand far off because of fear; and thus it is useful for us that we attend to the severity of the strict judge,
