Question Two. Why demons tempt human beings

Question Two of Chapter Six of the Third Decade

Why demons tempt human beings

It is asked what the temptation of demons intends.

To this it is answered that demonic temptation, or craftiness against a human being, labors toward five things.

First, to corrupt saving faith by errors and superstitions.

Second, to preserve the human being in them.

Third, to induce a way contrary to the virtues.

Fourth, to confirm the human being in his iniquities, so that he may thereby perish and be damned in the end.

Fifth, so that the human being may suffer sickness and affliction and may thereby become angry and offend God, as is contained in the gloss upon chapter Potest fieri, On Penance, distinction 1.

These things are from Henry of Assia upon Genesis.
