Question Three

That in the limbo of children there is neither punishment of sense nor are there demons

It is asked whether punishment of sense and demons are in the limbo of children.

To this it first appears that an affirmative answer should be given. For at least after the resurrection, children damned for original sin alone will be in the most foul flame of hell, to be filled with all the dregs of the world and of the elements, as Basil says. By these they will be painfully affected through the medium surrounding them, and thus they will suffer punishment of sense.

To this it is answered that this would indeed follow if the bodies of all the damned were then left to their natural properties and if the medium were prevented or suspended from its natural action in relation to no one. But this need not be so.

Likewise, nothing prevents the limbo of children from being the highest part of the infernal region, positioned beneath the elements.

Demons also are not there, since they are instruments for the punishment of sense, which is not there.

These things are from Henry of Hesse upon Genesis.
