Grillandus raises and solves this question, question 6, number 19. I think this is no small part of divine vengeance punishing human sins, and so I think that the solution of this question is the same as that of the following one. Yet I consider the chief cause to be the irreverence of priests and clerics themselves, who do not hold the vessels of the Lord in the honor they ought, nor present themselves chaste and pure from the stain of sins, as sanctified persons should. For in this way each provokes upon his own head the prophetic threat: “Incense is an abomination to me. I will not bear new moons, Sabbaths, and other feasts. My soul has hated your calends and your solemnities; they have become troublesome to me; I am weary of bearing them. I shall remove its hedge, and it shall be for plunder; I shall break down its wall, and it shall be for trampling.” There are innumerable similar passages in the sacred writings.
