Book on the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Prologue.
Liber de sacramento Eucharistiae. Prologus.
Quia de sacramento altaris multa sunt quae specialem habent difficultatem, ideo haec ad finem reservavimus, ut cum devotione et subtilitate ad haec tractanda vacaremus.
Et quia aliquando in missa vocatur gratia, et aliquando donum, sive datum, sive munus, et aliquando communio, et aliquando sacrificium, et aliquando sacramentum, ideo ipsum in sex istis dictis generibus ponimus, et quid proprie sibi secundum quodlibet dictorum generum proprie conveniat, in quantum Deus revelare dignabitur, diligenter inquiremus.
Primum autem tractabimus qualiter est in genere gratiae: quia ab hoc genere Eucharistiae nomen accepit, quod bona gratia interpretatur, eo quod illum continet qui vas est omnis boni et in quo est omnis gratiae plenitudo.

Because concerning the sacrament of the altar there are many things which have a special difficulty, therefore we have reserved these things to the end, so that with devotion and subtlety we might have leisure for treating these things.
And because sometimes in the Mass it is called grace, and sometimes a gift, or a thing given, or a present, and sometimes communion, and sometimes sacrifice, and sometimes sacrament, therefore we place it in these six aforesaid genera, and what properly belongs to it according to each of the said genera, insofar as God shall deign to reveal it, we shall diligently inquire.
First, however, we shall treat how it is in the genus of grace, because from this genus the Eucharist received its name, which is interpreted good grace, because it contains him who is the vessel of every good and in whom is the fullness of every grace.
