Question 124. Whether she was prophesied?
QUAESTIO CXXIV. Utrum fuerit prophetata?
Post haec videtur, quod fuerit prophetata.
Isa. XI, 1: Egredietur virga de radice Jesse. Glossa: « Virgo Maria. » Vel alia Glossa: Virgam et florem Judaei Christum suum interpretantur: quia in virga regnantis potentia, in flore pulchritudo. Nos vero per virgam Mariam intelligimus, cui nullus frutex peccati adhaesit. Vel alia Glossa: Egredietur virga. Glossa: « Prophetia de nativitate, ut tota Ecclesia cantat, Virgo Dei genetrix virga est, flos Filius ejus. »
Item, Numer. XXIV, 17: Orietur stella ex Jacob.
Item, Isa. IV, 2: Fructus terrae sublimis. Glossa: « Virginis Mariae. »
Item, Isa. VIII, 3: Accessi ad prophetissam. Glossa: « Virginem Mariam. »
Ex his patet, quod nativitas beatae Virginis est multipliciter prophetata.
QUESTION 124. Whether she was prophesied?
After this it seems that she was prophesied.
Isaiah 11:1: A rod shall go forth from the root of Jesse. The Gloss says: “The Virgin Mary.” Or another Gloss says: The Jews interpret the rod and the flower as their Christ, because in the rod there is the power of one reigning, and in the flower beauty. But we understand Mary by the rod, to which no bush of sin adhered. Or another Gloss: A rod shall go forth. The Gloss says: “A prophecy about the nativity, as the whole Church sings: the Virgin Mother of God is the rod, the flower is her Son.”
Likewise, Numbers 24:17: A star shall arise from Jacob.
Likewise, Isaiah 4:2: The fruit of the earth will be sublime. The Gloss says: “Of the Virgin Mary.”
Likewise, Isaiah 8:3: I went to the prophetess. The Gloss says: “The Virgin Mary.”
From these things it is clear that the nativity of the blessed Virgin was prophesied in many ways.
