Question 99. Whether she knew Grammar?

QUAESTIO XCIX. Utrum sciverit Grammaticam?
Post haec quaeritur de istis scientiis specialiter, et primo de grammatica, utrum illam sciverit beata Virgo?
Et videtur, quod sic:
1. Luc. II, 51: Maria conservabat omnia verba haec. Glossa: « In diversis prophetis: » ergo scivit legere. Et constat, quod intellexit: quia legere et non intelligere, negligere est: ergo scivit grammaticam.
QUESTION 99. Whether she knew Grammar?
After this inquiry is made about these sciences specifically, and first about grammar, whether the blessed Virgin knew it.
And it seems that she did:
1. Luke 2:51: Mary preserved all these words. The Gloss says: “In diverse prophets.” Therefore she knew how to read. And it is certain that she understood, because to read and not to understand is to neglect. Therefore she knew grammar.
2. Item, Damascenus dicit, quod in templo fuit enutritata, ubi virgines instruebantur.
3. Item, De Susanna legitur, quod erudierunt filiam suam secundum legem Moysis 1: principium autem eruditionis est grammatica: ergo beata Virgo scivit grammaticam in summo.
4. Item, Numquam peccavit in loquendo: ergo grammaticam scivit 2.
2. Likewise, Damascene says that she was reared in the temple, where virgins were instructed.
3. Likewise, concerning Susanna it is read that they instructed their daughter according to the law of Moses 1. But the beginning of instruction is grammar. Therefore the blessed Virgin knew grammar in the highest degree.
4. Likewise, she never sinned in speaking. Therefore she knew grammar 2.
