Joshua IV, 10 and 11: And the people hastened and passed over. The Gloss: "We must not act idly, not slackly; but all things must be passed through swiftly." And when all had passed over, although some most easily, nevertheless all fixing their hope of help upon her, the ark of the Lord also passed over. For she will precede us on account of some things, and will follow after us on account of certain things.

5. Likewise, she is the shield of defense with respect to us, and the shield of killing with respect to the demons. Joshua VIII, 18 and following: The Lord, namely the Father, said to Joshua, Christ his Son: Lift over every creature pure in sanctity, dignity, piety, and usefulness the shield, that is, Mary, defender of sinners and attacker of demons, which is in your hand, against the city Hai. The Gloss: "Hai is interpreted chaos, or their habitation, that is, of the demons who reign in the abyss." And when he had raised the shield, that is, Mary, in the annunciation by taking her as mother, and in the assumption by placing her with himself on the throne, he did not draw back the hand that he had stretched upward, holding the shield, that is, Mary, for our consolation, for the devil's slaughter, and for the destruction of sins, until all the inhabitants of Hai were killed. The Gloss: "Of these we ought to leave none, but destroy all."

6. Likewise, she is the sun, for helping all the faithful. Joshua X, 13: The sun and moon stood still until the nation avenged itself upon its enemies. The Gloss: visible and invisible. Therefore the sun stood in the midst of heaven and did not hasten to set. The Gloss: "it always rises for the faithful."

7. Likewise, she is the city of refuge. Joshua XX, 1 and following: to her he ought to flee who desires to escape death.

8. Likewise, she is the altar of our testimony. Joshua XXI, 26 and following: the sons of Ruben and Gad said: Let us build for ourselves an altar, that is, Mary, of infinite greatness, in mercy, in goodness, in humility, in generosity, in the conception of the Son of God, as a testimony of liberation, liberty, and heavenly inheritance, so that it may belong to our right to offer both holocausts and victims and peace-offerings; and so that tomorrow your sons may by no means say to our sons: You have no part in the Lord. And they call the altar, Our Testimony, that the Lord himself is God. This altar was built in conception, sanctified in the womb, built up in the incarnation, in the assumption.
