4. Ipsa est etiam virga concussionis, quae gratiam nobis apud Christum impetrat. Exodi, XVII, 3 et seq.: Sitivit populus prae aquae penuria... Et ait Dominus ad Moysen: Tolle virgam, id est, Mariam, percutiesque petram, id est, Christum, ipsum per eam impulsando: et exibit ex ea aqua, ut bibat populus.
5. Ipsa est etiam dulcificatrix omnium amaritudinum. Exod. XV, 23 et seq.: Non poterant bibere aquas, eo quod essent amarae. Glossa: id est, tribulationes, sed Dominus ostendit ei (Moysi) lignum, id est, Mariam, istam habens vim, quod cum misisset in aquas, in dulcedinem versae sunt.
6. Ipsa est etiam vas refectionis. Exod. XVI, 33: Sume vas unum, id est, Mariam, et mitte ibi Man, id est, Christum Deum, et hominem, quod factum est in incarnatione, et repone coram Domino ad servandum. Glossa: in memoriam aeternam.
7. Ipsa est etiam mons habitationis in incarnatione. Exod. XIX, 18: Totus mons Sinai, id est, Maria, fumabat gratia, et devotione, eo quod descendisset Dominus super eum in igne Spiritus sancti: et ascenderet fumus ex eo quasi de fornace: eratque omnis mons terribilis, scilicet diabolo, et omnibus Sanctis. Exod. XXIV, 16: Habitavit gloria Domini super Sinai, id est, Mariam. 8. Ipsa est et propitiatorium veniae. Exod. XXV, 17 et seq.: Facies propitiatorium, id est, Mariam, de auro mundissimo, quia in utero matris plusquam alii, fuit sanctificata. 12. Ipsa est etiam reconciliatrix, quod officium assumpsit, maxime in caelum ascendens. Unde designat eam Moyses, Exod. XXXII, 30, qui dixit ad populum, qui adoraverat vitulum: Peccastis peccatum maximum. Peccastis, dicit Virgo nostra, facillime, stultissime, verecundissime, multiplicissime, avarissime, insolubilissime. Ascendam ad Dominum misericorditer, fideliter, solemniter, si quo modo quivero eum deprecari pro scelere vestro. Glossa: quod tantum est. Sed nota, quod Moyses orabat, ut peccator, et servus. 4. She is also the rod of striking, which obtains grace for us with Christ. Exodus XVII, 3 and following: The people thirsted because of lack of water... And the Lord said to Moses: Take the rod, that is, Mary, and you shall strike the rock, that is, Christ, by impelling him through her; and water will come forth from it, so that the people may drink.
5. She is also the sweetener of all bitternesses. Exodus XV, 23 and following: They could not drink the waters because they were bitter. The Gloss: that is, tribulations; but the Lord showed him, Moses, wood, that is, Mary, having this power, that when he had sent it into the waters, they were changed into sweetness.
6. She is also the vessel of refreshment. Exodus XVI, 33: Take one vessel, that is, Mary, and put Manna there, that is, Christ, God and man, which was done in the incarnation, and place it before the Lord to be kept. The Gloss: for eternal remembrance.
7. She is also the mountain of habitation in the incarnation. Exodus XIX, 18: The whole mountain Sinai, that is, Mary, was smoking with grace and devotion, because the Lord had descended upon it in the fire of the Holy Spirit; and smoke ascended from it as from a furnace; and the whole mountain was terrible, namely to the devil and to all the Saints. Exodus XXIV, 16: The glory of the Lord dwelt upon Sinai, that is, Mary. The Gloss: that is, upon my measure, or my jar; for she is both God's measure and ours, and the jar of liberation, covering him with a cloud. The Gloss: with divine protection, for six days. The Gloss: because we are ordered to work for six days.
8. She is also the mercy-seat of pardon. Exodus XXV, 17 and following: You shall make a mercy-seat, that is, Mary, of purest gold, because in her mother's womb she was sanctified more than others. From there I shall command and speak to you, etc. You shall also make a table: ... and you shall make for it a golden rim. The Gloss: because she refutes all harmful and idle things. And you shall place upon the table the loaves of proposition. Hence she is also called the table of satisfaction.
9. She is also the lampstand of illumination. Exodus XXV, 31 and following: You shall make a hammered lampstand. The Gloss: with the hammers of the passion. And seven lamps. The Gloss: The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; and you shall place them upon the lampstand, that is, Mary, so that they may shine. The Gloss: for illuminating the tabernacle.
10. She is the hyacinth veil 1, with which the Son of God was veiled, and we are veiled from the devil and sin and the wrath of God.
11. She is also the altar of holocaust 2, with respect to the passion. And the altar of incense 3, with respect to devotion and contemplation.
12. She is also the reconciler, which office she took up, especially when ascending into heaven. Hence Moses designates her, Exodus XXXII, 30, who said to the people who had adored the calf: You have sinned a very great sin. You have sinned, says our Virgin, most easily, most foolishly, most shamefully, most manifoldly, most greedily, most indissolubly. I will ascend to the Lord mercifully, faithfully, solemnly, if in some way I shall be able to entreat him for your crime. The Gloss: because it is so great. But note that Moses prayed as a sinner and a servant. Hence he also said, Exodus XXXII, 13: Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. Behold, because on his own behalf he carefully brings in the fathers. But Mary prays as daughter, commands as sister, rules as mother. III Kings II,
