LI. Dominica vicesima tertia post festum Trinitatis, Oratio. Abeuntes Pharisaei consilium inierunt ut caperent Jesum in sermone 1. Domine Jesu Christe, doce nos astutias seductorum ex verbis eorum intelligere, detegere, et cavere ab eis qui nos ex verbis nostris capere volunt, directe non respondere, sed ex eorum verbis responsionem eos capientem elicere, verbis quae a multis dicuntur, ut propter hoc gloriosi videantur; vel ut eis placeamus non assentire, sed in omnibus rationem sequi, occasione falsae pietatis vel amplificandi cultum divinum nihil in praejudicium alterius dicere nisi quod justum credimus. Da nobis naturali et gratuita superscriptione insigniri, titulo tuae triumphalis passionis, tuae mortis memoriali, et tuae domus praeconiali: ut practici et theorici intellectus vitae corporalis et spiritualis vices prudenter alternando: reddamus quae sunt Caesaris, Caesari; et quae sunt Dei, Deo. Amen.
LI. Twenty-Third Sunday after the Feast of Trinity, Prayer. The Pharisees, going away, took counsel so that they might catch Jesus in speech 1. Lord Jesus Christ, teach us to understand the cunning devices of seducers from their words, to uncover them, and to beware of those who wish to catch us from our words; not to answer directly, but from their words to draw out an answer that catches them; not to assent to words that are spoken by many so that because of this they may seem glorious, or so that we may please them, but in all things to follow reason; on occasion of false piety or of amplifying divine worship to say nothing to the prejudice of another except what we believe just. Grant us to be marked by natural and gratuitous inscription, by the title of your triumphal Passion, by the memorial of your death, and by the proclamation of your house, so that, by prudently alternating the offices of practical and theoretical understanding of bodily and spiritual life, we may render the things that are Caesar's to Caesar, and the things that are God's to God. Amen.
