1. Hic commendatur beatissima Domina a suprema potentia, quam post Deum habet super omnes creaturas. Esther, II, 7, Esther erat pulchra nimis, et decora facie. Glossa: "circumdata varietate virtutum." Et infra, v. 15 et seq.: Erat Esther formosa valde, et incredibili pulchritudine, omnium oculis gratiosa et amabilis videbatur. Omnibus enim placet, Deo, Angelis, justis, peccatoribus. Et adamavit eam rex Assuerus, id est, Christus, plus quam omnes mulieres, ... et posuit diadema regni in capite ejus. Glossa: "Consortem eam regni fecit." Ecce potentia. Fecitque eam regnare potenter, aeternaliter: potenter regnat, quia ditissima, et tribuit cui vult, quantum, et quando vult, et quotiescumque vult: aeternaliter, quia regni ejus non erit finis 2. Item, Est sponsa Dei, de cujus dignissimis nuptiis dicitur, Esther, II, 18: Rex Assuerus, id est, Christus, pro conjunctione, et nuptiis Esther, id est, Mariae, in die annuntiationis celebratis, quarum conciliator fuit Gabriel, jussit convivium praeparari. Glossa: id est, gaudium spirituale, permagnificum in toto orbe, in caelo, et in purgatorio: dies enim maximi gaudii est dies incarnationis Filii Dei: et cunctis principibus et servis suis. Glossa: id est, majoribus, et minoribus. Et dedit requiem universis provinciis. Requiem gratiae terrestribus, requiem gloriae caelestibus, requiem tribulationis in purgatorio manentibus, ac dona largitus est juxta magnificentiam principalem, regaliter dans, universa dans, celeriter dans, et hilariter dans. 3. Item, Ipsa est domus, et vestiaria, ex qua indutus fuit Filius Dei carne, peccator venia, justus gratia, perfectus gloria. Esther, IV, 1 et seq.: Mardochaeus indutus est sacco, mortalitatis, et miseriae,
that is, of those who are in heaven; you are the joy of Israel, that is, of those grieving and groaning for sins in this world; you are the honor of our people, abject as we are, because you have acted manfully. The Gloss: "Against the prince of the world." And therefore you will be blessed forever by God, by Angels, and by men. And all the people said: Let it be! Let it be!
9. Likewise, she is the threatener of all who harm the servants and handmaids of her Son. Judith XVI, 20: Woe to the nation. The Gloss: forever, rising up against my race, that is, the worshipers of God!
BOOK OF ESTHER.
In the days of Ahasuerus 1.
1. Here the most blessed Lady is commended by the supreme power that, after God, she has over all creatures. Esther II, 7: Esther was exceedingly beautiful and fair of face. The Gloss: "surrounded with the variety of virtues." And below, verse 15 and following: Esther was very shapely and of incredible beauty; she seemed gracious and lovable to the eyes of all. For she pleases all: God, Angels, the just, sinners. And King Ahasuerus, that is, Christ, loved her more than all women, ... and placed the diadem of the kingdom upon her head. The Gloss: "He made her consort of the kingdom." Behold the power. And he made her reign powerfully and eternally: she reigns powerfully because she is most rich and bestows on whom she wishes, as much as she wishes, when she wishes, and as often as she wishes; eternally, because of her kingdom there will be no end 2. Therefore she is deservedly called the most powerful, most generous, and eternal queen. These three things concur in no queen except in her.
2. Likewise, she is the spouse of God, concerning whose most worthy nuptials it is said, Esther II, 18: King Ahasuerus, that is, Christ, for the union and nuptials of Esther, that is, Mary, celebrated on the day of the annunciation, of which Gabriel was the mediator, ordered a banquet to be prepared. The Gloss: that is, spiritual joy, very magnificent in the whole world, in heaven, and in purgatory; for the day of the incarnation of the Son of God is the day of greatest joy; and for all his princes and servants. The Gloss: that is, for greater and lesser. And he gave rest to all the provinces: the rest of grace to earthly persons, the rest of glory to heavenly persons, the rest from tribulation to those remaining in purgatory; and he bestowed gifts according to princely magnificence, giving royally, giving all things, giving swiftly, and giving cheerfully. Hence he cries to us, saying what the old man from Mount Ephraim said: Peace be with you; I will supply all things that are necessary; only, I beg you, do not remain in the street 3.
3. Likewise, she is the house and wardrobe from which the Son of God was clothed with flesh, the sinner with pardon, the just person with grace, the perfect person with glory. Esther IV, 1 and following: Mordecai was clothed with sackcloth, of mortality and misery,
