Sermon XXII conclusion
in quocumque negotio deceptores seminant iniquitatis semen: et hi metent vindictam septuplicem. Prima est ignis inclementia. Secunda, frigoris vehementia. Tertia, fames inenarrabilis. Quarta, sitis intolerabilis. Quinta, morborum seu infirmitatum diversitas. Sexta, fatigatio seu laborum sempiternitas. Septima, mortis aeternitas.
5. Quintus sator est diabolus, de quo dicit Dominus, Matth. xiii, 25 et 39: Cum dormirent homines, venit inimicus, et superseminavit zizania in medio tritici. Et infra: Inimicus autem, qui seminavit ea, est diabolus. Igitur libero arbitrio dormiente, et defensione rationis non obstes, diabolus in corda hominum, ubi Deus seminaverit triticum virtutum, superseminat zizania vitiorum, scilicet, superbiae, irae, invidiae, avaritiae, acediae, gulae, luxuriae, et pravitatis haereticae; et ex istis seminibus reportabitur aeterna poena gehennae.
6. Officium etiam satoris habet ipsa mors, per quam corpora istorum hominum revertuntur in pulverem; sed ex pulveribus iterum suscitabuntur in gloriam. Unde I ad Corinth. xv, 42 et seq.: Seminatur corpus in corruptione multiplicis infirmitatis: surget in corruptione aeternae et deliciosae sanitatis. Seminatur in ignobilitate abjectae vilitatis: surget in gloria regiae dignitatis. Seminatur in infirmitate paupertatis: surget in virtute opulentae felicitatis. Seminatur corpus animale per conditionem bestialis necessitatis: surget corpus spirituale per dignitatem angelicae pietatis.
Quod corpus in die judicii nobis praestare dignetur, etc.
in any business sow the seed of iniquity, and these will reap sevenfold vengeance. The first is the harshness of fire. The second, the vehemence of cold. The third, unutterable hunger. The fourth, intolerable thirst. The fifth, diversity of diseases or infirmities. The sixth, everlasting weariness or labors. The seventh, the eternity of death.
5. The fifth sower is the devil, concerning whom the Lord says, Matthew 13:25 and 39: When human beings were sleeping, the enemy came and oversowed cockle in the midst of the wheat. And below: But the enemy who sowed them is the devil. Therefore, when free choice is sleeping and the defense of reason does not stand in the way, the devil oversows in the hearts of human beings, where God had sown the wheat of virtues, the cockles of vices, namely of pride, anger, envy, avarice, acedia, gluttony, luxury, and heretical depravity; and from these seeds the eternal punishment of Gehenna will be carried back.
6. Death itself also has the office of a sower, through which the bodies of these human beings return into dust; but from the dusts they will again be raised into glory. Hence 1 Corinthians 15:42 and following: The body is sown in the corruption of manifold infirmity; it will rise in the incorruption of eternal and delightful health. It is sown in the ignobility of abject vileness; it will rise in the glory of royal dignity. It is sown in the infirmity of poverty; it will rise in the power of wealthy felicity. The animal body is sown through the condition of beastly necessity; a spiritual body will rise through the dignity of angelic piety.
May he deign to grant us that body on the day of judgment, etc.
