XIII. First Sunday in Lent, Prayer
XIII. Dominica prima in Quadragesima, Oratio. Ductus est Jesus in desertum a Spiritu 1. Domine Jesu Christe, qui me per gratiam tuam in desertum poenitentiae duxisti, protege me ut non vincat me tentator, ne a filiatione Dei succumbam vanae gloriae, ne velim quod duritia poenitentiae molestet; sed verbo veritatis converte mihi duritias poenitentiae, quas tentator lapides vocat, in panes: et voluptates, quas panes vocat, in lapides. Non statuat me supra pinnaculum templi quo me caeteris meliorem aestimem, non mittat deorsum per falsam humilitatem, non tentem Dominum meum, occasionem peccandi praestando, per immoderatas afflictiones corporis vires enervando, vel qualicumque periculo me committendo. Non assumat me in montem ambitionis, ne cadens per avaritiam adorem eum flectendo ei genua cordis mei, voluntatem scilicet, et cogitationem. Repelle a me omne quod tibi adversatur: ut te Dominum meum adorem, et tibi soli serviam. Et relinquat me tentator, et Angeli tui accedant ad me a malis custodiendo, et ministrent mihi in bono promovendo. Amen.
XIII. First Sunday in Lent, Prayer. Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit 1. Lord Jesus Christ, who by your grace have led me into the desert of penitence, protect me so that the tempter may not conquer me, lest I fall away from the sonship of God into empty glory, lest I will that the hardness of penitence be troublesome; but by the word of truth convert for me the hardnesses of penitence, which the tempter calls stones, into breads, and the pleasures, which he calls breads, into stones. Let him not set me above the pinnacle of the temple, whereby I may judge myself better than others; let him not cast me down through false humility; let me not tempt my Lord by furnishing an occasion of sinning, by weakening the powers of the body through immoderate afflictions, or by committing myself to any danger whatever. Let him not take me up onto the mountain of ambition, lest, falling through avarice, I adore him by bending to him the knees of my heart, namely will and thought. Drive away from me everything that is opposed to you, so that I may adore you, my Lord, and serve you alone. And let the tempter leave me, and let your Angels come to me by guarding me from evils, and minister to me by advancing me in good. Amen.
